Should I use polyurethane or tungsten carbide sleeves?

Tungsten last longer but more expensive. Something that not everyone is aware of, the Schmidt TVII tungsten carbide sleeve can be used for steel grit whereas the original tungsten carbide Thompson Valve is not recommended for steel grit.

Good Questions! Thank you for your interest in Schmidt products.

Tungsten Carbide is a superior sleeve over the Urethane and we suggest use most abrasive blasting applications when your vessel is equipped with the Thompson Valve II. There have been vast improvements to the Thompson Valve II design that allows use of the tungsten carbide sleeve even in steel grit applications and realize the superior wear capability over the urethane sleeve.

In our original Thompson Valve, we received customer feedback that is was necessary to use a urethane sleeve only in a steel grit or aluminum oxide application because of some isolated situations that the original valve was encountering. Through extensive research and development, those issues were solved in the Thompson Valve II and now the customer can realize the superior wear capabilities without concern.

The initial investment is more for tungsten, but we firmly believe that the long term savings is far greater. The only time we would recommend the urethane sleeve is in a competitive bid where the issue is strictly price and the customer may not be educated yet to the long term savings. Every effort should be made to express the superior wear capabilities to the customer and then react using your best judgement.

Solution:

Most any ASME approved pressure vessel can be converted with a Thompson Valve II metering valve. If you already have the TVII with a urethane sleeve, simply change the sleeve to a tungsten carbide.

Call your nearest distributor and inquire about our improved, easy to install conversion kits for virtually any ASME approved pressure vessel. Or contact Axxiom directly for additional information.
